• MATERIAL FEEDBACK

    A Textile Reseach Project
    Ellena Lawrence

The goal of the project is to explore the interaction between electronic wearables and woven fabric and what kind of effects can be achieved with different weaving styles and materials. This has been done by a team of prominent electronic textile designers before and I hope to build off their work and techniques. At NCAD I am also taking a medical devices course, focusing in bio instrumentation. After experimenting with woven technique in relation to sensors, I will take the most successful iterations and apply them to a final project based around biofeedback. Biofeedback is a process through which certain autonomic responses like blood flow, heart rate, and breathing are monitored and that information is fed back to the users in a simplified form. This awareness allows them to consciously affect their autonomic responses. Linked with stress relief and management, biofeedback can have positive effects on the user in the short and long term. Once this feedback loop has been established it can have a further reach into the users life and secondary users such as doctors can get involved, making overall health monitoring more user involved and comprehensive for medical analysis. This is an ambitious project and may not be fully realized with my time at NCAD.
